When the two electrodes are touched simultaneously, the device flashes and makes a pleasing warbling sound. Ultraviolet Detecting Beads Polseres màgiques Our UV-sensitive beads contain a pigment which changes color when exposed to ultraviolet light from the Sun or other UV source. The pony beads are not, however, affected by visible light and so will remain pale indoors, or when shielded from UV light as is the case in most modern automobiles. Many of today's space telescopes observe colors of light not in the visible spectrum such as infrared and ultraviolet. Children can make a simple bracelet from a standard pipe cleaner or strip of rawhide which can function as a UV detector. Many other experiments are possible as well... test sunglasses for the effectiveness of their UV protection, or even suntan lotion. We have only just begun to discover the possibilities! Radiometer Radiòmetres Originally, designed by William Crooke in the 1860's, the radiometer still fascinates both young and old. Whenever light shines on the four diamond shaped vains the paddle wheel spins at up to 3,000 rpm. Great for illustrating the conversion of light energy into mechanical energy. Each vain is black on one side and white on the other. Because the black surface absorbs energy better than the white reflective side, the molecules of air move faster near the black surface. Diving Submarine Submarins submergibles Remember the submarine toys you used to find in cereal boxes? This little submarine works the same way. Powered by Baking Powder (not baking soda), it dives and surfaces just like a real submarine. As the Baking Powder reacts with the water, carbon dioxide is produced. This gas forces water out of the submarine decreasing its density and allowing it to surface. This is much the same way a real sub surfaces by purging its ballast tanks. After the sub reaches the surface, the gas bubble is allowed to escape, water takes its place, and the sub dives again. Cow Magnets Imant de vaca (Alnico) Why "Cow" magnet? Farmers often place one of these cow magnets in the cow's stomach to attract nails or small pieces of iron that the cow ingests. This prevents damage to a cow's stomach or 'Hardware Disease.'This standard Alnico cow magnet has a magnetic pole on each end, and is perfect for a 3-D demonstration of magnetic fields, similar to that produced by the earth.
